Janelle Monae in 944 Magazine

Her style is unique and eventhough being "different" in this music biz is frowned upon, I dont mind saying out loud that i'm a Janelle Monae fan.
Furthermore, I like the exclusivity ☺.
"My motto is, ‘Don’t get too high or low.’ Meaning, don’t get too high over the praises and accolades or too low over opinions or critiques." - Janelle Monae.

For the rest of the interview check out 944.

P.S: I want that Rodrigo Otazu hat she's sportin'. that ish is FYAH

Oh yea...stay tune for the Tightrope remix video featuring B.o.B & Lupe Fiasco. Here's a preview..

Monae Overdose: Janelle Monae in Honey Magazine

"I like to think of my music as very trans-formative. If you listen to the album from the beginning to the end, you will be transformed. It’s an album that’s deals with self-realization as well. You start to realize things about yourself you didn’t know. One big emotional picture for the mind." - J.Monae

The Man Behind The Music; Johnny Wonder

Whether I post music here or at HZM, I always give props to who I got the music from and every now and then someone will ask "who is Johnny Wonder?", well folks have no fear, the Jamaica Gleaner broke it down for you.
The world of dancehall is made up of countless stars but few wonders. While most like to be in the spotlight, for entrepreneur and music lover Johnny Wonder, working behind the scenes and making things happen is what he does best.

Johnny Wonder is a name known to everybody in dancehall circles, yet few outside are familiar with the name. The Sunday Gleaner recently spoke to the humble Wonder about his work for the last 25 years - bringing Jamaican music to the world. Growing up as a teenager in New York immersed in the popular culture of hip hop, Wonder never grew up imagining he would have been a frequent visitor to the Caribbean and a lover of Jamaican music.
At the age of 15, Wonder made his first contact with local music while hanging around Washington Square Park listening to the likes of Black Uhuru, Sly and Robbie, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown and others. The reggae fever soon caught the youngster who, in the '80s, opened two reggae retail stores in Manhattan and playing out on his own sound system, Street Life International, at popular reggae joints. Wonder soon linked with legendary producer, King Jammy's, who was then making a name for himself in the business.

In the mid-'80s, Wonder made his first trip to Jamaica and was hooked. Working with the likes of Risto Benji, Junior Cat, Pan Head, Bounty Killer, Wonder, alongside King Jammy's and VP Records, started distributing reggae/dancehall music to the world. Wonder found himself in the late'90s working with TVT Records, an independent US record label founded by Steve Gottlieb. In the midst of distributing music, Wonder found time to manage the early careers of Bounty Killer, Elephant Man and the Scare Dem Crew.

After a brief break from reggae in the late '90s, Wonder couldn't stay away for long.
"I came back into reggae in like 2002 and I would send out emails with records I liked," Johnny Wonder told The Sunday Gleaner. "I went back to work for VP Records and that didn't work out so what I do now is do an email blast and distribute music, working with artistes, taking them around and promoting them. I work with everybody. We push reggae music and artistes and go into the streets with dem when they are nobody, push them to mek dem become stars. Been doing that since Jammy's days."

Wonder's email blasts, which are done under his company, 21st Promotions, send local music to the globe. From local to international disc jocks, everyone seems to get their music from Johnny Wonder first. Wonder's email list has 2,600 contacts from Hawaii to Europe, the United States, Australia - anywhere there is a love for Jamaican music.
"Now the email blasts it's ridiculous, it's big. Even right now I got eight or nine things in my email I gotta download. Now I dunno what I did but everybody wants me to send out their things," he said.
While it's been years of hard work in the streets doing promotions, Wonder said he has no plans of leaving the business.
"Reggae is just something I have a passion for," he said. "Reggae and dancehall is a challenge. I like to see people come from nothing to something. I do it for the love of music and trying to help it out."

Outside of his email blasts and promotions, Wonder has also done DVDs chronicling and highlighting young talent. The first DVD, Dancehall Draft Picks Volume One, showcased then young stars Busy Signal, Aidonia, Mavado and others, which was released for VP Records. According to Wonder, the DVD did well and he is now editing volume two, which was produced by Hapilos Entertainment and will be released independently.

For the future, Wonder has big dreams for Jamaican music.

"I'm working on everybody's projects. I want to release records and compilations and albums and working on digital distribution like what we used to do," he said. "I know there is a market for it so I wanna fill that void."
One of Wonder's latest accomplishments is having been added to the Reggae Grammy Committee from where he plans to continue making a difference in reggae music.

Big up Johnny, keep doing the damn thing, without you alot of these blogs/ radio stations/ selectors wouldnt be the same, so Johnny jus kno..we appreciate you and we're also looking fwd to the next Dancehall Draft picks zeen ☺

VP Exec says Grammy Reggae category "never reflects what’s going on"

“For 25 years it seems the same people get nominated and win the award. It never reflects what’s going on. Everybody’s been grumbling about it for years. About four years ago I started to investigate it and found out we don’t have a lot of people in our genre that are actually voting. For the lack of a better analogy, [the typical voter] is a white guy from Minnesota and he’s looking at the list [of eligible albums] going, ‘Oh Mavado, Busy Signal, Beres Hammond, Etana, ooh Black Uhuru, I loved ‘em in ‘72.’ Click. He’s just going with people he knows. He doesn’t have a clue who Busy Signal or Mavado is.”
                     - Cristy Barber vice-president of marketing and promotions at VP Records.

Queen Paula and Lisa Hype to clash??

What in tarnation is going on?

How Queen Paula fi ah clash Lisa Hype??? Queen Paula and Lisa is soooo not in the same class. I understand they are both females and they dj, BUT I think at where Paula is at her age (yes I used the age card), why would Paula clash Lisa? should'nt she be clashing Lady Saw or someone who came up in her time??

The last time I heard anything from Paula was around 'dem gal sitt'n' time, and for the record I thought that was THEEE WACKEST lines from her. I remember back in the day, only a few could touch Queen Paula when it came to lyrics but she fell off, and for that I would never expect Paula to really clash. BUT Miss Paula, if you're gonna do it, let it be done and you better do da damn thing dammit!

"Mi hear say Scorn Dem ah call up mi name when she de a Jamaica ah fret say she owe the voodoo man ah Haiti and she caan get another hit song till she pay the man him money. Lisa Hyper caan chat to me, she ah drink water outta deadman skull fi go back pon the Gaza. Money-O run outta money and gone jump the monkey ah country, and Face is a disgrace, and Stacious ah feed duppy pon the housetop after midnight. Mi come fi shake up the bag and talk out dem secret," - Queen Paula said.
"Queen Paula step up to the plate when Face and Spice dem a run so mi affi go write her off. Somebody haffi dead fi mek dem know say mi serious and ready fi kill people," Lisa Hyper told one876entertainment.

Well... whatever happens, I know I'll be youtube-ing the highlights along with the LA Lewis / Goofy clash.

P.S - is it safe to call Spice a coward now since she backed out of a clash with Lisa? and did anyone realize that she called out Macka Diamond as well?? when did she and Macka stop linking?? hmmm...

Nas & Jr Gong Distant Relatives album cover

This album was suppose to drop last June but didnt, not sure what happened, and I also haven't heard about the outcome from the debate they had in Washington 2 wks ago. Being that an album cover (and track listing, which I wont post for bootlegging purpose) is floating around, my guess is we should look for this album being dropped sometime in the first quarter of 2010. Cant wait! until then feast your eyes on this..

This song will also be on their album. Props to illroots for the footage.

The VP Records Story

The VP Records label was founded in 1979 by the late Vincent "Randy" Chin and his wife Patricia Chin, Chinese Jamaicans who owned theRandy's Records in Kingston, Jamaica (as seen in the 1978 film Rockers) as well as the Studio 17 recording studios. In the mid-1970s, the Chins moved to New York City, setting up a record store in Brooklyn called VP Records in 1975, from which they sold and distributed records. In 1979 they relocated the store to Jamaica, Queens. In 1993, the record label was formed after the success of the retail store. The name of the label is a product of the first letters in the founders' names, hence the title "VP".

VP Records has been awarded Billboard's "Best Independent Label" for two consecutive years and has received the award for "Best Reggae Imprint Label" for three consecutive years. VP was also nominated for Best Independent Reggae Label at the 2003 Billboard Hip-Hop and R&B awards, and had been mentioned and featured in publications such as Vibe magazine, New York TimesLos Angeles TimesBillboard, and Time magazine.

The label is now run by Mr. Chin's sons Randy and Christopher, while Ms. Patricia Chin continues to assist with the maintenance of her late husband's company as well. In 2007, VP Records began re-issuing classic albums from the 1970s and 1980s on the 17 North Parade label, the address of Randy's Studio, where it all began.

Personal thought: Gotta give VP thanx for giving these artistes a chance but at the same time they've swindled a few artistes over the yrs, so my advice to anyone thinking of signing to them, READ WHATEVER IT IS THEY'RE GIVING YOU TO SIGN, otherwise from that, big up uself VP!
